I watched Romeo + Juliet today, and I really like how the director set this movie. This movie was directed by Baz Luhrmann, and it was released in 1996 which means that it is even older than me. The director kept the most of the orginal language from the play which was written by Shakespeare, but he also changed some lines to make the movie more smooth. This movie was partial modernized which changed most of the setting. For example, they used TV to deliver some information which was not exist in Shakespeare's time. The changing of setting made the story more close to life because it looked like that it happened around our time period, and this is the one thing made me like this movie so much. Another reason why I like this movie characters building.
As we all know, the more you changes you make the harder it would be, so I have to say that this director is a geniuses. He used outfits and symbols to separate Mountegue and Capulets, and it worked well because there were so many different characters from each sides. If they are all in different styles it would be so confusing. Another setting I like is that they used so many different kinds of back ground music which were modern music, they worked so well. For example, there was a kid who did not sing along with other kids, and he always sang a different song after others were done, so it make me feel both the traditional and modern emotion. Every different performence has a different setting, but they all have one goal which is making scenes work. If the the scene works well it is a good setting.
I also like the characters' building so much because I can feel each character so real in the movie. For example, when Romeo was finding Juliet, I can see the light of hope coming out of his eyes and trying to get Juliet. Another detaile I noticed is that Fther Lawrence has a Cross tattoo on his back, but he is doing a science experiment which built this character so special because it really catch my attention. Also the blocking of characters helped to build them better. For example, when Romeo's friend was killed he was standing on the stairs, and it made people notice him and remember what he said. I consider that building characters is one of the most important thing in a performence, so I would learn from this movie and use it in my future performence.
This movie is so different from the original play, but the story is the same, and they all bring me into the story. I wish I can learn and use skills what the director use in the movie to make my videos better and better. For example, I can do more things with stage setting and characters' development. Thus, a good movie can always make you feel like you are in the story.
