To compare with difference between the Novel and Play of Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time I decided to analysis them from three different ways, and they are reading, feeling and details. They are so different from each other because they are written to achieve different goals. The novel is trying to tell the story by itself, but the play is trying to give the theater a version of the story which can make them easier to present.
From the reading point of view, I think the play is easier to read, but I enjoy the novel better. I have both of their ebook in my iPad, and the novel has 1380 pages and the play has 916 pages. As we can see, the play is much shorter than the novel, and the play has separate the dialogue and setting, so I can read it so fast. However the play cuts many characters' thoughts and movements. For example, in the novel Christopher gives us all his thoughts, so we can understand why he reacts so differently, but in the play, Christopher repeats numbers over over again. In the novel it also has some scenes which tell us how Christopher plays his video games. I enjoy the novel better because it gives me a more interesting and completed story. In the novel has so many details, like pictures that Christopher sees or draws, and it make me view the situation more directly. However, a play is wrote to be a play on stage, so I cannot have a full picture of the story by only reading the play. I hope I can see the play version in a theater.
Even though the novel and the play tell the same story, they still give me so different feelings. The novel gives me a picture in my mind which tells the story. Sometimes the original novel is too hard to make it a play. For example, in this story, it has so many different scenes in the house, on the street, in the train and in the yard, and all of them make it harder and harder to present whole story on a stage. So the play has to cut some parts to make it a easier to perform which also make me feel so hard to under stand the play if I did not read the novel before. As we all know, even same actors will act in different ways for same plays, so the play is really controlled by all different kinds people who are in the performence. From my point of view, I consider that making a play is much harder than a novel because the novel just need a author but a play need so many people work together and are worried about seeing, timing and lighting etc. I would say that a play on the stage gives me more feelings than the play on paper.
Details are the last and the most important thing in both novel and play, and they are also one of the biggest differences between novel and play. For example, the play has different characters' name because it can make actors easier to deliver lines and audience understand it easier. However, in the novel it has so many details that I need to read over again, for example, I have to read the math processing over again because if I don't get the math I could not understand Christopher as an character. Different details give people different information but it all help the production to become better.
Finally, I want to say that Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time is a great story, and I am happy that I read both novel and play. I hope that someday I can see the play on stage, so I can feel differences again, and finding more connection between literature and performence from details, feelings.
